I spent 6 dark years in rainy Portland addicted to heroin in the 2000s. Elliott Smith was the soundtrack to my life at the time. He got me through some very tough times. Luckily, my best friend had a record player, so we got to listen to his music at its best. I felt a connection to Elliott's music & lyrics on a soul level, unlike any other musician. Sadly, my best friend opted to end his life, and he passed while listening to Elliott. I eventually escaped Portland and am now 10 years clean. I still love Elliott's music and mourn his passing.

You forgot that Gen X was the first generation to have parental advisory on the the labels on music. They didn’t like that they couldn’t control all the labels so they made a law to control the population. 18 or older to buy music you could hear on the radio lol. They also started the editing of songs by bleeping out lyrics.

There it is nothing but a way to share your music links. GIVE UP no one cares especially the new generation, music died in 1999.

Taking the .0001% chance either of you wd read this: you guys came SO close to a great old joke with the "22 modulations" song, do you know it? Goes: Singer asks accompanist if they have any ideas for their show tonight, & he responds w/a description like yours: "do the 2nd verse a half step flat, change keys twice in the chorus" etc. Horrified, the singer asks why the musician would ever suggest such a horridly mangled arrangement: the piano player just shrugs & says, "Well, that's the way you sang it **last** night...." Ouch.

a fretted guitar is a scale of notes, a fretless guitar is a spectrum of notes. it's like singing. you gotta monitor the sound as it comes out and immediately adjust to correct the pitch

Ooh, condescending. Writing as I reached 68 this week, one of your 65 pluses. I wish I had the space or time to construct a sensible enough reply to most of what you have said. As a 14 year old I used to listen to Alan Freeman on Radio 1 on a Saturday afternoon and couldn't understand how an old man could possibly relate to the rock trends at the time. I actually made a conscious decision on one such Saturday to always be open to new music and I spend most of my music listening searching for new music. Some of it is incredible, but you know what? Most of it isn't, not because of a generational gap, but because pretty much anyone can make music, anywhere, whether you have talent or not. The best music is innovative and will stand the test of time, and those nostalgia apologists, are actually, generally, listening to the best of the best. This can include going back, not just decades, but hundreds of years. I like to think that I have good taste in music, if you can define that, but there is too much music in the world and not enough time. I'm stopping now, no time, but you have annoyed me a little, so keep making content that provokes a reaction.

I have not written any songs about you, but I did have a dream about you once. I was on an airplane flying first class (not my typical actual class of service during waking hours travel, sadly) and I looked over and saw you in the aisle seat of the row behind me. I wasn’t sure if I should say anything but eventually I asked “Are you Mary?” and when you answered in the affirmative I told you I was a fan. And…that’s it. That was the dream. Weird, I know 🤷🏼‍♂️

Great Mary. The Rory festival in Ballyshannon is the end of the month May '24, Uli Jon Roth, Band of Friends, Pat McManus, Canned Heat and Johnny Gallagher, it's a great event. Rory was the biggest star to those who know.
